Recommended Use
IBI provides redistilled crystalline phenol for use in nucleic acid purification. Allow
contents to equilibrate to room temperature before opening. Melt at temperatures no
greater than 50C, before saturating with a volume of water or buffer equal to the
specified weight of phenol. If buffer equilibration is desired, only amounts to be
immediately used should be saturated. The rate of oxidation and formation of breakdown
products increases as pH increases. Oxidized phenol appears yellow or pink in color, and
should NOT be used.
Example: For 100 g of phenol use 100 mL of water or buffer. To purify
400 ml of sample, add 400 ml of saturated phenol.
Storage
IBI phenol is prepared from ultra-pure phenol double-distilled under nitrogen. The product
is packaged under nitrogen for maximum stability. Store crystalline phenol at -20oC. After
saturating, store at +4oC and keep tightly sealed.
Warning
Poison! Corrosive. May be harmful if swallowed. Avoid inhalation of vapors. Use only in a
well ventilated area. Avoid contact with eyes, skin and clothing; may cause severe burns.
